15% of Americans Would Prefer an AI Manager Over a Human Boss, New Poll Reveals

Would you consider replacing your manager with a chatbot? An increasing portion of Americans are open to the idea. A Quinnipiac University poll released on Monday reveals that 15% of U.S. adults would be willing to work in a role where an artificial intelligence program directly supervised them, handling task assignments and schedule management.

The survey, conducted from March 19 to 23, 2026, involved 1,397 American adults and explored attitudes toward AI adoption, trust, and workplace anxieties. While most respondents preferred to keep a human boss, the concept of AI supervision is gaining traction, even if such systems aren't yet managing entire teams.

Companies are already integrating AI to take over supervisory duties. Workday has introduced AI agents capable of filing and approving employee expense reports. Amazon has implemented new AI workflows that assume certain middle-management responsibilities, resulting in the layoffs of thousands of managers. At Uber, engineers developed an AI model mimicking CEO Dara Khosrowshahi to review project pitches before meetings with the real executive.

This trend is contributing to what some term "The Great Flattening," where AI eliminates various management layers across organizations. Looking ahead, we might eventually see billion-dollar companies operated largely by one individual, supported by fully automated staff and executives.

However, Americans are apprehensive about the implications for employment. In the Quinnipiac survey, a significant 70% of respondents believe AI advancements will reduce job opportunities for people. Among those currently employed, 30% expressed being very or somewhat concerned that AI could specifically make their own position obsolete.
