Meta's camera-enabled smart glasses have outperformed other products in the market, yet they've also sparked significant unease among some consumers who view them as troubling symbols of a dystopian surveillance culture. As the company faces criticism for allegedly selling "pervert glasses," it has apparently made the decision to offer a version without built-in surveillance technology.

According to The Information, Meta is working on a new smart glasses model called Luna, which, lacking cameras, features a handy way to interact with the company's AI chatbot and Muse, its AI consumer agent. These glasses come with six integrated microphones to allow users to engage with the chatbot, plus a button on the side that, when pushed, turns on the AI system.

Luna could be revealed as early as Meta Connect, Meta's yearly hardware and developer conference taking place in Menlo Park next week, as reported by the outlet.

The smart glasses sector has expanded in recent years, with Meta among the leading providers. Nevertheless, issues around practicality, expense, and privacy have continued to plague the industry, leaving many consumers uncertain about how, why, or whether to adopt these devices.

Meta's Reality Labs, the division in charge of its smart glasses development, continues to hemorrhage an enormous sum of money, as indicated in its earnings report from April.
