Lambda Eyes $14.5B Valuation in $4B Round Ahead of 2027 IPO

Cloud computing provider Lambda is in the process of securing up to $4 billion in funding, based on a pre-money valuation of $14.5 billion. This could represent the company's final private fundraising effort ahead of a planned initial public offering in 2027, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. The investment round is being co-led by Coatue Management and Blackstone.

According to a letter to investors that the Journal examined, Lambda's backlog surged dramatically—from $15 billion in June to $50 billion by September. On the surface, this suggests booming demand. However, a closer look reveals that a substantial portion of that growth stems from a single $35 billion commitment made by Anthropic, which struck a deal with Lambda in late August. Consequently, Lambda's valuation—which has risen sharply since its 2025 funding round—may be heavily contingent on Anthropic's continued ability to pay.

Even so, given how scarce reliable GPU capacity has become, investors remain eager to back companies that can supply it, particularly those holding major contracts with leading AI labs. For so-called neoclouds like Lambda, the challenge isn't demand—it's the expense of fulfilling it. Data center construction is primarily financed through debt, and Lambda just raised an additional $1 billion last week. Lenders, meanwhile, are becoming more selective about whom they fund and under what terms.

By raising more capital now, Lambda not only establishes a benchmark for its eventual IPO pricing but also secures additional funding before facing the heightened scrutiny that comes with public markets. When Lambda eventually goes public—reportedly intended for this year but delayed due to market uncertainty—it will join other Nvidia-backed neoclouds such as CoreWeave and Nebius, which now rely on the strength of their stock to finance their data center expansions. Another British neocloud, Nscale, filed for an IPO last month and is expected to start trading shortly.
