Amazon invests $13 billion to expand AI and cloud infrastructure in India through 2030

Amazon has announced a fresh $13 billion investment to enhance its artificial intelligence and cloud computing operations in India, with the funds to be deployed by 2030. The commitment was revealed on Thursday following a meeting between Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. This latest injection will support the expansion of Amazon Web Services’ data center capabilities in Mumbai and Hyderabad.

This marks the third major pledge Amazon has made for India within the past few years. In 2023, after another meeting between Jassy and Modi, the company committed $15 billion by 2030—including $12.7 billion for AWS. That was followed by an additional commitment of over $35 billion in December 2025. With this new announcement, Amazon’s total investment commitments in the country now stand at $48 billion.

Amazon did not provide a detailed breakdown of how the full $48 billion will be allocated across its various Indian businesses. Long-term commitments from technology companies typically encompass both capital and operational expenditures, rather than being limited to new infrastructure spending alone.

Amazon’s move comes amid a surge in investments by global tech firms betting on India becoming a major hub for the computing infrastructure required to power AI products. Microsoft announced in December it would invest $17.5 billion in India by 2029, while Google said in October it would spend $15 billion to build an AI hub and data center infrastructure in the country. India has also attracted billions in commitments for data center projects from investors such as Australia’s AirTrunk, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board’s CPP Investments, and domestic conglomerates Reliance Industries and Adani Group.

The Indian government has sought to attract more investment through policy incentives, including tax exemptions for foreign cloud providers on services sold overseas, provided those workloads are run from Indian data centers.

Beyond cloud and AI, Amazon is also expanding its domestic retail and logistics network. The company plans to open more than 20 fulfillment centers and over 100 last-mile delivery stations this year. This week, it detailed plans to broaden its quick-commerce service, Amazon Now, to over 300 cities and towns across the country. This expansion comes as Amazon seeks to gain traction in India’s crowded quick-commerce market, where it competes with Eternal-owned Blinkit, Swiggy’s Instamart, Zepto, and Walmart-owned Flipkart. Earlier this week, Flipkart announced plans to open 1,500 micro-fulfillment centers across India by the end of 2026.
