Amazon Launches Customizable Alexa+ Personalities: Brief, Chill, and Sweet

Amazon has unveiled a new capability that lets users adjust the personality of its AI assistant, Alexa+. Starting Wednesday, three distinct personality styles—Brief, Chill, and Sweet—are available to modify Alexa’s tone. The Brief style delivers shorter, direct replies, while Chill mode makes Alexa respond like a relaxed friend. When Sweet is enabled, Alexa becomes warmer and more enthusiastic, providing encouragement and positive feedback.

The concept of giving an AI a defined personality has presented challenges for developers. Some users of chatbots like OpenAI’s GPT-4o have reportedly formed unhealthy attachments to the technology, with several lawsuits claiming it worsened existing mental health conditions and, in extreme cases, contributed to crises or suicides. Nevertheless, many users prefer having control over how their AI interacts, often creating custom instructions to shape its demeanor.

In response to this demand, OpenAI introduced new ChatGPT features last December that let users fine-tune the AI’s baseline style and tone, including its warmth, enthusiasm, and use of emojis. Even so, some have noted that the latest model tends to be overly reassuring by default.

Amazon explains that its new Alexa styles are built around five key personality dimensions: expressiveness, emotional openness, formality, directness, and humor. Each style combines specific levels of these traits. For example, Brief is not only concise but also casual, direct, and low on humor.

To switch Alexa’s style, users can either speak to the assistant through a compatible device, such as an Echo speaker, or adjust the setting in the Alexa app under Device Settings > Personality Style. Amazon has indicated that these three styles are just the beginning, with more options planned for the future.
