Amazon's Alexa+ Debuts Conversational AI for Ring Doorbells to Manage Deliveries and Visitors

Amazon is introducing a conversational AI capability to Alexa+ for Ring doorbells, enabling users to coordinate deliveries, decline sales visits, and allow family or friends to record messages when they are away. Named Greetings, this functionality allows Ring to assess visitors by observing their clothing, behavior, and items they are carrying, then tailor its response appropriately.

For instance, if the system detects someone in delivery attire leaving a package, it will follow the homeowner’s predefined instructions. The feature includes options to designate where packages should be placed and can guide delivery personnel to available water or snacks. Should a signature be required, Alexa can inquire about the courier’s return timing and relay that information to the user.

The AI can also manage interactions with sales representatives or service providers. Homeowners can set a polite automated reply, such as, “If someone comes to the door trying to sell something, politely let them know we’re not interested.” When residents are occupied or absent, Alexa can welcome friends or family and prompt them to leave a recorded message.

However, this technology carries the potential for misidentification and awkward responses. For example, if a friend who works in logistics visits after hours while still in uniform, Ring might mistakenly instruct them to leave a package rather than offering the message option.

This update follows the earlier and contentious “Familiar Faces” feature for Ring, which allowed users to build a database of up to 50 frequent visitors. Once tagged, these individuals would be identified by name in the Ring app’s activity log and alerts. Amazon clarifies that Greetings relies on Ring’s video descriptions to pinpoint the primary subject in frame for generating replies and does not actually identify the person.

Compatibility is limited to the Ring Wired Doorbell Pro (3rd Gen) and Ring Wired Doorbell Plus (2nd Gen). Access requires a Ring Premium Plan with video descriptions enabled. The feature is currently being released to Alexa+ Early Access subscribers in the United States and Canada.
