AI Super PAC Faces $20 Million Counter-Campaign in New York Congressional Race

Toward the end of last year, New York Assembly member Alex Bores found himself in the crosshairs of a pro-AI super PAC aiming to derail his campaign for Congress. The organization, called Leading the Future, is supported by over $100 million from prominent backers such as Andreessen Horowitz, OpenAI President Greg Brockman, the AI search startup Perplexity, and Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale. Bores’ reaction was straightforward: he welcomed the challenge.

Now, he has the resources to match that confidence. According to a Bloomberg report, Public First Action—a PAC funded by a $20 million contribution from Anthropic—is investing $450,000 to support Bores in the contest for New York’s 12th congressional district. While this committee also advocates for artificial intelligence, it promotes a distinct approach focused on transparency, safety regulations, and public accountability.

In contrast, the industry-supported PAC, Leading the Future, has already directed $1.1 million into advertisements targeting Bores. This opposition stems largely from his sponsorship of New York’s RAISE Act, which mandates that leading AI developers reveal their safety measures and report significant instances of system misuse.
