Anthropic Explores AI Chip Collaboration with Samsung Amid Chip Shortage Concerns

Back in April, Reuters reported that Anthropic was considering the possibility of producing its own AI chips as a way to address chip shortages. Now, it seems the company is moving forward with this concept. On Thursday, The Information reported that Anthropic had been in discussions with Samsung to explore a potential collaboration on the upcoming chip. However, according to the report, Anthropic has yet to determine the chip's intended use, how it will integrate into servers, or its processing power. When asked about a possible partnership with Samsung, the company declined to provide further details.

Many AI firms have pursued the development of custom chips—both to design specialized hardware for particular computing tasks and to reduce their reliance on Nvidia, which remains the undisputed leader in the chip industry. Anthropic's move may also be a response to a recent announcement by its key rival, OpenAI, which partnered with Broadcom to unveil its own custom-built inference processor, dubbed "Jalapeño." OpenAI claims this chip is more efficient, offering better performance-per-watt compared to competing chips. Amazon and Google also offer custom-built TPUs as part of their cloud services.

Samsung is already deeply involved in the AI sector, serving as a major partner for Nvidia by producing chips needed for training or running AI models. In return, Samsung uses Nvidia's software to manufacture its own chips. The two companies are collaborating on an AI chip factory in South Korea. Additionally, Samsung has been in talks with Google about supporting its chip-making initiatives.
