Anthropic Overtakes OpenAI in Business Customers for the First Time, Ramp AI Index Reveals

For the first time, Anthropic has overtaken OpenAI in verified business customers, according to this month’s AI Index from financial technology firm Ramp. The report, based on expense data from Ramp’s clients, reveals that 34.4% of participating businesses now pay for Anthropic’s services—more than any other AI lab—while only 32.3% pay for OpenAI. This marks the first time Anthropic has claimed the top spot. “It’s across the other firms where OpenAI still has a lead, but that has been shrinking over the past couple of months.”
Because the index only reflects companies using Ramp, it isn’t a perfect representation of the broader market. Still, the sample includes over 50,000 businesses, making it both extensive and diverse enough to carry significance. More importantly, the overall trend is evident across the industry. On OpenRouter’s leaderboard, which surveys a different user base, OpenAI was last ranked above Anthropic in December 2025. According to Ramp’s data, the past year has been especially transformative for Anthropic. In May 2025, just 9% of businesses paid for Anthropic’s products, a figure that surged by 26% over the following 12 months. During the same period, OpenAI’s share dropped by 1%, while the overall proportion of businesses using any AI product increased by 9%. Kharazian is doubtful that this advantage will persist, as he outlined in a blog post, but noted that the past year’s success demonstrated Anthropic had chosen a sound strategy.
