Apple to Let iPhone Users Choose Third-Party AI Models in iOS 27 ‘Extensions’ Feature

When iOS 27 arrives later this year, iPhone users may find themselves with a wide array of artificial intelligence models to choose from directly on their devices. According to a fresh report from Bloomberg, Apple intends to offer users a selection of third-party large language models capable of powering various functions within the iPhone’s operating system. Internally referred to as "Extensions," this feature will let users "access generative AI capabilities from installed apps on demand, through Apple Intelligence features such as Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground and more," as described in a message reportedly shown in test versions of the software.

The same capability is expected to extend to iPadOS 27 and macOS 27, with models from Google and Anthropic currently under testing, according to the outlet. However, the situation regarding ChatGPT remains less clear. Since it is already the model available to users, one possible implication is that it will continue to be an option.

As long-serving CEO Tim Cook prepares to step down, incoming top executive John Ternus will be responsible for steering the company’s future—including its AI strategy. Although Apple is widely seen as lagging behind in AI, not launching as many new services as some competitors, the company continues to generate substantial AI-related revenue. Its approach focuses less on heavy investment in AI infrastructure and services and more on transforming its existing hardware into an AI-centric user experience.
