Jensen Huang believes that American workers have nothing to fear from artificial intelligence's potential to displace jobs. During a Monday evening conversation with MSNBC's Becky Quick, hosted by the Milken Institute, the Nvidia CEO struck an upbeat tone, arguing that AI is a large-scale job creator rather than a harbinger of mass unemployment, as some "AI doomers" have warned. The discussion covered a range of topics, but a recurring theme was the economic anxiety surrounding the AI industry and whether Americans should genuinely worry about it. At one point, Quick noted, "This is happening so quickly. Is there a bigger dislocation than we’ve seen in the past that leads to greater inequality? And what do we do about that?"

Throughout the evening, Huang maintained a positive outlook. "AI creates jobs," he asserted, adding that "AI is the United States' best opportunity to re-industrialize." He pointed out that the AI industry relies on a new type of industrial factory—those producing the hardware that serves as critical infrastructure for AI businesses. (Huang's company, notably, sells a great deal of this hardware.) These factories require workers, as does the broader, expanding AI sector. Huang reasoned that automating a specific task does not necessarily mean a person's entire job will be replaced. People who believe this "misunderstand that the purpose of a job and the task of a job are related" but ultimately not the same thing, he said. In essence, his argument is that even when AI takes over a discrete task within a role, the overall function an employee serves in an organization is likely to remain.

Huang also criticized those who claim AI will dominate humanity or wipe out large sectors of the economy. "My greatest concern is that we scare…people—all the people that we’re telling these science fiction stories to, to the point where AI is so unpopular in the United States, or people are so afraid of it, that they don’t actually engage it," he said. Ironically, much of the "doomer" rhetoric has originated from the AI industry itself, and critics argue that such hyperbole is often used as a marketing tactic to generate buzz and excitement for products that are far from achieving the capabilities suggested. What long-term impact this will have on the overall economy remains uncertain. However, reputable financial and academic organizations have projected that as much as 15 percent of jobs in the U.S. could be eliminated over the next several years due to AI.
