OpenAI Co-Founder Barret Zoph Departs Again for New AI Venture

The revolving door of AI leadership keeps spinning. Barret Zoph, a co-founder of the AI startup Thinking Machines who rejoined OpenAI earlier this year, has already moved on to a new role. Zoph originally spent two years at OpenAI before leaving in October 2024 to launch Thinking Machines alongside Mira Murati, who had departed the AI lab the previous month. In January, Zoph—along with fellow Thinking Machines co-founder Luke Metz—made a dramatic exit from the startup to head back to OpenAI. That reunion, however, didn't last. Zoph spent just five months at OpenAI, where he was put in charge of leading AI enterprise sales, before leaving the company in June. Now, his next destination has been revealed: Zoph has accepted a position as vice president of research at Google, another workplace where he previously spent time. "We look forward to Barret returning to Google and bringing his RL and post-training expertise to Gemini," a Google spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal.
Figuring out why tech executives seem to be cycling through roles faster than ever isn't always straightforward. The AI sector is experiencing particularly high turnover, and OpenAI has been at the center of the churn. Despite gearing up for an IPO and holding one of the most formidable positions in the technology landscape, the company has shed a significant number of key personnel over the past eight months. From the departure of its chief operating officer to the recent exit of a top data center executive, the string of high-level losses has left industry observers puzzled.
