Simplifying access to government services is certainly a worthy ambition, but whether an AI chatbot is the right solution remains an open question. Large language models are far from perfect and continue to produce hallucinations — fabricated or inaccurate information presented as fact. CNN recently reported a striking example: the U.S. military came dangerously close to launching an armed operation against a Chinese vessel suspected of carrying nuclear weapons components. The mission was called off at the final moment once officials realized the perceived threat was actually just an AI hallucination.

While a mistake from America.gov likely wouldn't escalate to the brink of nuclear conflict, the consequences could still be significant. Users may turn to this chatbot for guidance on applying for food stamps, renewing visas, or filing taxes — situations where inaccurate information could lead to missed deadlines, denied benefits, or financial penalties.
