Etsy Launches Native ChatGPT App, Letting Shoppers Find Unique Gifts Using Natural Language

Etsy has introduced its native app within ChatGPT, offering shoppers a new way to explore its catalog of over 100 million listings. This experience moves beyond traditional keyword searches. Instead of typing "wooden coffee table" and then sifting through filters, users can describe what they want in natural language—for example, "Help me find a Mother's Day gift under $100 for my mom who loves gardening."
Now available in beta, the feature lets users tag @Etsy directly in a prompt. The Etsy app within ChatGPT then shows relevant product listings, which users can browse, compare, and click through to Etsy for more details or to make a purchase. This isn't Etsy's first foray into ChatGPT. In September, Etsy was an early partner in ChatGPT's Instant Checkout integration, allowing users to buy products directly in the chat interface. However, that initiative ended in March, reportedly because it didn't generate significant sales for Etsy, prompting the company to build a native app instead. Alongside this launch, Etsy is also testing a beta conversational search experience on its platform, designed to help users find gifts. The gift assistant acts as a personal shopper, guiding users through a conversational process to discover ideas, refine preferences, and surface relevant products.

This move is part of Etsy's broader AI strategy, which includes an AI-powered discovery experience with curated collections and a suite of seller tools. These tools help generate product titles and descriptions, as well as a writing assistant for drafting messages to buyers. In 2024, Etsy introduced a "Designed" label to identify AI content, aiming to increase transparency as AI-generated artwork becomes more common on the platform. The ChatGPT integration news comes a week after Etsy reported its Q1 2026 earnings, surpassing revenue expectations with $631 million. Marketplace gross merchandise sales were up 6% year over year, and active buyers increased for the first time in two years to 86.6 million. Etsy also noted 5.6 million active sellers. In February, the company announced it was selling Depop to eBay for $1.2 billion in cash, a move focused on strengthening its core marketplace. Etsy joins a growing list of companies building native apps within ChatGPT, including Angi, SeatGeek, Tubi, and Wix. Developers have been able to build apps within the chatbot since October.
