Meta Launches Muse AI Agent at Connect 2024: Zuckerberg Reveals Jolly Avatar to Handle Everyday Tasks

Meta's personal AI agent Muse has barely been on the scene for a few weeks, yet the social media titan is already racing to expand what could be its most significant consumer AI investment to date. During the company's annual Connect gathering in Menlo Park on Wednesday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg delivered a keynote that sent an unmistakable message: Meta is betting everything on Muse. The agent—whose physical avatar goes by the name Jolly, according to Zuckerberg—is built to manage routine tasks by linking up with users' apps and services, such as email and calendars. At the event, Zuckerberg rolled out a host of fresh features and integrations aimed at making Muse more capable and more tightly integrated into everyday life. Should users want it, Muse will be omnipresent—even on their Meta AI glasses.

Launched in early September, Muse operates across a user's various devices and digital accounts. The agent runs on Muse Spark, Meta's multimodal AI model designed specifically for agentic functions. Meta has positioned it as a more approachable agent compared to rival offerings—an AI assistant that, right from the start, lets people automate the tedious chores in their lives.

"The centerpiece of our vision for what we're building is Muse," Zuckerberg declared as he opened the keynote, dressed in khakis and a black T-shirt reading "Building is My love Language" across the chest. "In the coming years, I expect that Muse is going to grow into the personal superintelligence that billions of people around the world are going to use to accomplish their goals and improve their lives."

Zuckerberg also envisions Muse putting money in users' pockets—and naturally, eventually in Meta's coffers too. "We're standing behind this by making Muse free for a huge number of tokens, with the expectation that over time we will profit by taking a small fee from transactions," he explained.

Here are the new features and capabilities that caught our attention…

**Muse gets its own digital avatar**

Among the more entertaining reveals on Wednesday was that Muse users will soon be able to create a unique digital avatar for their specific agent and then engage in real-time video chats with it. Meta says a new AI model called Muse Realtime Avatar has been built to power this particular feature. The concept is to give Meta's previously faceless AI software a face, body, and voice, making it far more personable. There's definitely a touch of Metaverse flavor to this feature, which was demonstrated live on stage at Connect. Users will be able to hold live conversations with this avatar, assigning it tasks and posing questions.

**Muse will soon be active in Meta smart glasses**

Meta also announced that Muse will be integrated with its smart glasses lineup. This means users will be able to communicate with their agent simply by speaking to their glasses. The agent springs to life via a wake word, according to the company, and will be capable of guiding users through a personalized workout, logging meals, booking appointments, and helping them purchase products they spot. Meta said Muse will operate in the background and check back in once it's finished. It remains unclear precisely when this feature will roll out, though Meta says it should arrive sometime in "the coming months."

**Soon, you'll be able to let Muse run your Mac**

Meta says it's bringing Muse computer work to Mac. The company had previously mentioned Muse coming to Mac and used Wednesday to share a few additional details. This means users will be able to hand off tasks to the agent, and—much like other popular AI agents from OpenAI and Anthropic—Muse will be capable of operating any app on a user's desktop. "You can have it help you run your small business, or just get work done for you," Meta's chief AI officer Alexandr Wang said Wednesday during the keynote. "You can walk away from your computer and it keeps working for you on all the jobs you lined up."

**Muse will get its own email address**

Since Muse will constantly be working in the background, it will naturally require its own email address. Meta's Wang announced the company is developing that feature and will make it available "soon," without offering a more specific timeline. Users will also be able to add Muse to an email thread or forward emails from the agent to handle on their behalf.

**Shopping partnerships and connectors galore**

Meta has secured partnerships with companies like Stripe and Shopify, signaling that the company views Muse as a key shopping tool. According to Wang, Muse can access the entire Shopify product catalog agentically and use Lync and now Shop Pay to purchase almost anything on the internet. He also noted that Meta has added more support for payments with PayPal. The company additionally announced a series of new partnerships with retailers, including Best Buy, Gap, Sephora, Walmart, and Wayfair. Muse will be able to connect with these retail apps as well as with Expedia and, soon, Instacart. Other connectors include GitHub, Granola, and Notion. Wang noted that the company wants Muse to connect with small businesses too. Meta recently opened its platform to allow developers to build their own "connectors." The company received more than 1,500 applications in less than a week, he said, adding, "I think this could be a generational opportunity to start building for a new platform as it takes off, and the response so far has been really great."
