Figma Integrates OpenAI's Codex for Seamless Design-to-Code Workflow

Figma is incorporating OpenAI's AI coding assistant, Codex, enabling users to develop and adjust designs directly from their coding environments. This announcement follows a similar collaboration the design firm established with Anthropic just last week to integrate Claude Code. Through this integration, individuals can begin a project in Figma or write code in Codex, seamlessly switching between the two platforms using Figma's Mobile Context Protocol (MCP) server.

Previously, it was possible to import elements from Figma design files, Figma Make, or FigJam into Codex for implementation in code. "With this integration, teams can build on their best ideas—not just their first idea—by combining the best of code with the creativity, collaboration, and craft that comes with Figma’s infinite canvas," stated Loredan Crisan, Figma’s chief design officer.

"The integration makes Codex powerful for a much broader range of builders and businesses because it doesn’t assume you’re ‘a designer’ or ‘an engineer’ first. Engineers can iterate visually without leaving their flow, and designers can work closer to real implementation without becoming full-time coders," explained Codex product lead Alexander Embiricos in a statement.

OpenAI initially introduced Codex as a command-line coding assistant last year to compete with Anthropic's highly praised Claude Code. The company later integrated the coding tool into ChatGPT and, earlier this month, launched a dedicated MacOS application for Codex. This MacOS app achieved one million downloads within its first week of availability. Shortly after, OpenAI released two new Codex models.

The company reports that over a million users engage with Codex on a weekly basis. Figma has emerged as a significant partner for OpenAI, being among the first companies to launch an application within ChatGPT in October 2025.
