Firefox is introducing new options for users who prefer to avoid AI integration in their browser. Starting Monday, Mozilla revealed that Firefox will soon allow users to block all existing and upcoming generative AI capabilities. Alternatively, individuals can choose to disable specific AI functions while keeping others active.

With the release of Firefox 148 on February 24, a dedicated AI controls section will appear in the desktop browser settings. Users who wish to avoid all AI-related features can enable the "Block AI enhancements" toggle. Once activated, this setting will prevent any pop-ups or prompts related to current or future AI tools.

The updated controls also provide granular management over individual AI features. These include the "Translations" tool for browsing in a preferred language, Alt text generation in PDFs, AI-assisted tab grouping, link previews, and the sidebar AI chatbot. The chatbot supports various services such as AnthropicClaude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, GoogleGemini, and Le Chat Mistral.

"AI is changing the web, and people want very different things from it," the company explained in a blog post. "We’ve heard from many who want nothing to do with AI. We’ve also heard from others who want AI tools that are genuinely useful. Listening to our community, alongside our ongoing commitment to offer choice, led us to build AI controls."

This development follows the appointment of Anthony Enzor-DeMeo as Mozilla's CEO in December. At the time, Enzor-DeMeo stated that Mozilla would invest in AI and incorporate AI features into Firefox, while ensuring these features remain optional. "AI should always be a choice - something people can easily turn off. People should know why a feature works the way it does and what value they get from it," he wrote in a blog post.

These remarks come as Mozilla navigates a rapidly evolving browser landscape. While browsers like Firefox and Google Chrome have led the market for over a decade, they now face growing competition from companies such as Perplexity, Arc, OpenAI, and Opera.

Alongside its AI investments, Mozilla is emphasizing transparency. Last week, Mozilla President Mark Surman described building "a rebel alliance of sorts" composed of tech startups, developers, and public-interest technologists dedicated to fostering trustworthy AI and balancing the influence of major players like OpenAI and Anthropic.

According to recent reports, Mozilla plans to allocate approximately $1.4 billion from its reserves to support technology businesses and nonprofits, including its own initiatives. The company is directing investments toward advancing AI transparency and challenging firms that are expanding rapidly with minimal oversight.
