Fitbit Founders Launch Luffu, an AI Startup for Proactive Family Health Monitoring

Fitbit's original founders, James Park and Eric Friedman, have introduced a new AI-driven venture named Luffu, focused on enabling families to monitor their health proactively. They are creating an "intelligent family care system" that will initially launch as an app before evolving to include dedicated hardware. Having departed Google two years ago, Park and Friedman are now placing their confidence in artificial intelligence to reduce the cognitive strain associated with caregiving. Recent data indicates that approximately 63 million adults in the United States—nearly one in four—serve as family caregivers, a figure that has risen by 45% over the past decade.

Luffu employs AI to discreetly collect and structure family data, recognize daily routines, and highlight significant changes, helping families stay informed and tackle possible health concerns early. "During our time at Fitbit, we concentrated on individual health, but afterward, my perspective expanded beyond just my own well-being," Park explained in a statement. "I was managing my parents' care from a distance, struggling to consolidate my mother's medical information across different platforms and providers, compounded by a language barrier that made it difficult to get full, timely updates about her doctor appointments. I wanted to avoid constant check-ins, and she didn't want to feel under surveillance. Luffu is the solution we longed for—a way to keep track of our family's health, notice changes, and know when to intervene, without being overbearing."

Park and Friedman observe that while today's consumer health market offers many tools for individuals, real-world health involves partners, children, parents, pets, and caregivers. Family details are often fragmented across devices, patient portals, calendars, email attachments, spreadsheets, and physical documents. Luffu aims to consolidate tracking for the entire household, covering health metrics, diet, medications, symptoms, lab results, medical appointments, and more. Users can input health information via voice, text, or images. The system actively monitors for variations, providing insights and alerts for anomalies like unusual vital signs or shifts in sleep patterns. The founders mentioned that users can ask everyday questions about their family's health, such as "Is Dad's new meal plan affecting his blood pressure?" or "Did someone give the dog his medication?"

"We built Luffu to record details as they occur, keep family members in the loop, and highlight important information when it's most relevant—making caregiving feel more organized and less overwhelming," Friedman stated. Those interested in Luffu can sign up for the waitlist to access the limited public beta.
