Google Unveils Gemini AI Upgrades for Android: Multi-Step Task Automation, Enhanced Scam Detection, and Smarter Screen Search

On Wednesday, Google introduced several enhancements to its Gemini AI features on Android, with the standout addition being a new capability for handling multi-step tasks such as ordering an Uber or arranging food delivery. These automations are part of a broader set of Gemini improvements rolling out now, which also include an expanded scam detection system for phone calls and updates to Circle to Search that enable identification of all items on a phone screen.

According to Google, these automations essentially let users delegate their to-do lists to Gemini. In practice, however, what Gemini can manage remains somewhat limited. The company notes that this beta feature will initially work with selected apps in food, grocery, and rideshare categories. It will also be restricted to the Gemini app on specific devices, including the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Samsung Galaxy S26 series, and will first launch only in the U.S. and Korea.

Naturally, AI-powered automations carry some risk of errors, so Google has incorporated several safeguards. To begin, automations require an explicit command from the device owner to start. Users can monitor progress in real time and halt a task if it goes off course. Google also emphasizes that these automations operate within a secure, virtual window on the phone, with access limited to specific apps rather than the full data on the device.

This feature aligns with the growing trend of using AI to automate personal tasks. For example, ChatGPT allows users to create scheduled tasks and offers an agent capable of computer-based activities like managing calendars, creating slideshows, or executing code. Anthropic’s Cowork brings Claude AI to non-coding contexts, enabling everyday file and task automation for non-developers. Additionally, an AI tool called OpenClaw recently gained attention for its ability to handle routine activities like sending emails, managing calendars, and checking into flights.

Another Gemini update now available is the expansion of Scam Detection for phone calls, which is launching on Samsung Galaxy S26 series devices in the U.S. This feature is already offered on Pixel phones in the U.S., Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, and the U.K. Google is also using its on-device Gemini model to detect scam texts in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. on Pixel 10 series devices, with plans to extend it soon to Galaxy S26 series phones.

Finally, Google has enhanced its Circle to Search feature, which uses gestures like scribbling and circling to start searches. It can now identify everything visible on the phone screen, rather than just a single object. This means users can search for each clothing item and accessory in an outfit they like, or explore a group of items and related topics displayed on screen.

Google has been consistently rolling out Gemini updates across its Android ecosystem through regular OS updates and targeted enhancements for its flagship Pixel phones via frequent Pixel Drops. In contrast, Apple has faced challenges in launching a more comprehensive AI feature set, which includes an AI-powered Siri—a release recently delayed again until later this year.
