Google Expands Gemini AI Integration to Chrome in India, Canada, and New Zealand

Google revealed on Wednesday that it is extending Gemini integration in Chrome to additional regions, including India, Canada, and New Zealand. This expansion introduces a sidebar on the desktop version, allowing users to interact with Google's AI chatbot directly within Chrome. They can ask questions about on-screen content, retrieve information from connected services like Gmail, Keep, Drive, and YouTube, and even compare the contents of different tabs. As part of this update, Gemini will now support several new languages: Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu, and Tamil, in addition to English and Chrome's other recently added languages.

Google initially launched Gemini in Chrome for the U.S. last September, featuring a floating window. Earlier this year, the company shifted to a sidebar-based interface. Eligible users will notice an "Ask Gemini" icon on the tab bar, which can be activated for any open tab to ask questions, summarize content, or generate quizzes for better topic comprehension. Google highlighted that Gemini can operate across multiple tabs, enabling users to reference several tabs simultaneously—ideal for comparing shopping items or travel tickets. The assistant also integrates with various Google tools to provide more personalized responses by accessing data from Gmail, Maps, Calendar, YouTube, and other apps. For example, users can compose and send emails directly from the Chrome sidebar or ask Gemini to summarize a YouTube video with timestamped key points. Additionally, it can help schedule meetings or provide daily briefings.

Users can also leverage Google's Nano Banana 2 generative AI tool within Gemini for Chrome to modify images. This allows for tasks like uploading a photo of a room while furniture shopping and asking the assistant to visualize how a new item would look in that space.

Alongside the desktop rollout, Google is introducing Gemini support in Chrome for iOS in India. Once available, this feature will appear in the address bar via a page tools icon.

In January, Google launched enhanced agentic capabilities for U.S.-based AI Pro and AI Ultra users, enabling the AI to take control of the browser and perform tasks autonomously. However, this functionality is not included in the current expansion for users in India, New Zealand, and Canada.
