A major new collaboration has emerged between a Hollywood powerhouse and a technology giant. On Monday, Google DeepMind revealed a $75 million investment (as reported by the WSJ) in the acclaimed independent film studio A24, known for producing hits like “Marty Supreme,” “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” and the recent blockbuster “Backrooms.” Google DeepMind is framing this investment as a groundbreaking partnership, calling it a “first-of-its-kind” agreement that will involve co-creating AI tools for filmmaking. As part of the deal, Google DeepMind will receive “feedback and guidance from leading artists.” A24 has recently collaborated with major stars such as Timothée Chalamet and Anne Hathaway on several projects.
“We believe the best way to develop tools that empower artists is to work directly with them,” said Demis Hassabis, co-founder and CEO of Google DeepMind, in a press release. “By collaborating with filmmakers and industry leaders like A24 from the beginning, we can build new AI features to support artists in authentic, meaningful storytelling that helps enable their creative vision.”

Although the use of AI in movies has stirred controversy throughout Hollywood, A24 would not be the first studio to explore integrating artificial intelligence into the creative process. Earlier this year, Netflix announced it was acquiring Ben Affleck’s company, Interpositive, which develops AI tools for filmmakers. Meanwhile, last year, Amazon’s MGM Studios launched an AI unit dedicated to creating tools for television and movie production.
