Google Unveils Conversational AI Search with Follow-Up Questions and Gemini 3 Upgrade

Google is introducing a new feature that allows users to pose follow-up questions directly from AI Overviews, the AI-generated summaries appearing at the top of search results. This enables a conversational exchange with AI Mode, Google's dedicated feature for handling complex search queries.
The company has also announced that Gemini 3 is now the default model powering AI Overviews worldwide. In a blog post, Google stated this upgrade provides users with "a best-in-class AI response right on the search results page."
These announcements reflect Google's continuous initiative to transform Search from a static list of results into a more dynamic, AI-powered interactive tool. Robby Stein, VP of Product for Google Search, explained in the blog post, "People come to Search for an incredibly wide range of questions - sometimes to find information quickly, like a sports score or the weather, where a simple result is all you need. But for complex questions or tasks where you need to explore a topic deeply, you should be able to seamlessly tap into a powerful conversational AI experience."
According to Google's testing, users favor an experience that naturally transitions into a conversation. The ability to ask contextual follow-up questions based on an AI Overview makes Search more useful. The company describes the new design as a unified flow, featuring links that let users shift from a quick summary to an in-depth dialogue as needed.
These updates follow closely on Google's recent announcement about integrating "Personal Intelligence" into AI Mode. This capability allows the feature to access a user's Gmail and Google Photos to deliver more personalized responses. Personal Intelligence was first introduced in the Gemini app earlier this month, enabling the AI assistant to customize answers by connecting information across a user's Google ecosystem, starting with Gmail, Photos, Search, and YouTube history.
In another recent development, Google expanded AI Overviews to Gmail. This lets users search their inbox using natural language to obtain quick answers, moving beyond traditional keyword searches and the need to open multiple emails to find specific information. This feature was announced alongside the debut of a new AI Inbox.
