Google rolled out a broad set of new study tools on Wednesday, spanning both Search and Gemini. These include AI-powered interactive visuals, 3D simulations, a dedicated student hub, personalized practice quizzes, and other features. This move is part of Google’s ongoing push to position Gemini as the go-to AI assistant for students, especially as it faces competition from the likes of OpenAI and education-focused startups such as Knowt and Gauth, which are also building their own learning and practice offerings.

On Search, students can now create custom tools and simulations to better grasp complex subjects. For instance, someone learning about pH levels could search for “pH scale” and see an interactive visual within an AI Overview that simplifies the fundamentals. To dive deeper, they can ask a more specific follow-up—like plotting citrus fruits on the pH scale—and AI Mode in Search will craft an interactive experience tailored to that query.

Users can also get customized practice quizzes right in Search across a range of subjects, from science and math to humanities and foreign languages. For example, someone could type, “Create a quiz with the most commonly tested vocabulary words to help me prep for the SAT,” and Search will generate an interactive quiz on the spot. In the coming weeks, Lens in Search is set to introduce a new interactive learning experience designed to help students work through problems. By tapping the Lens camera icon in the Google app and uploading a photo of their work, they can get AI to explain the concept, flag potential errors, and offer guidance when they’re stuck. Additionally, students can now ask Search to create study documents based on files they upload—like PDFs, docs, or slides. For instance, they could upload a photo of handwritten notes along with lecture slides to receive a one-pager that highlights key concepts.

On the Gemini side, Google is introducing a feature that allows students to launch multi-step research reports in Gemini Live and then discuss the findings conversationally. Users can ask Gemini to research a topic and then step away or multitask while it works in the background. They’ll get a notification once the report is ready, and they can then talk through the results or ask follow-up questions using their voice. Google also announced that Gemini can now generate functional 3D simulations to help users better understand topics, with responses now including tables, grids, and simulations built specifically for the prompt. For example, a prompt like “show me how DNA works in 3D” would let users interactively rotate and zoom into a 3D DNA structure. In addition, Google is launching a dedicated hub within the Gemini app that consolidates its learning tools in one place. From there, users can start a study notebook, create flashcards, take practice quizzes, and more—all within a single, streamlined space.
