Google Photos Launches AI-Powered Digital Closet to Create and Virtually Try On New Outfit Ideas

Google Photos has announced a new AI-driven feature that will transform photos of your clothing into a digital wardrobe, allowing you to craft fresh outfit combinations and even preview them virtually. This concept clearly draws inspiration from Cher's iconic virtual closet in the movie "Clueless," where she could effortlessly browse through her outfits while deciding what to wear. According to Google, the feature will use artificial intelligence to automatically build a replica of your wardrobe based on the garments visible in your Google Photos collection. Within the app, you'll be able to sort items by category—such as tops, bottoms, jewelry, and more—then mix and match them to assemble different looks. In "Clueless," the digital closet was designed to underscore Cher's privileged lifestyle. Since then, the fashion industry and numerous startups have aimed to recreate that seamless outfit-making experience. Google is betting that AI can make a similar tool accessible to everyone, with the potential to improve over time as the technology evolves.

These outfit ideas can be shared with friends or saved to a digital moodboard, where you can store concepts for various occasions like travel, events, date nights, work, and beyond. Additionally, another feature will enable you to virtually try on items to see how the looks might appear. The feature isn't available yet, but Google has stated it will launch on Google Photos for Android later this summer, followed by iOS, and will be located under the "Collections" tab. It will compete with existing apps such as Acloset, Combyne, Pureple, Wearing, Alta, and others. The company hasn't provided detailed information on how the AI functions, but it notes that the technology will identify clothing and accessories in your photo library to generate individual snapshots. While the AI may be capable of pulling images from well-lit, full-body photos, you'll likely achieve better results by taking the time to photograph your clothing yourself, much like Cher did.
