Google patches record 1,072 Chrome security bugs in one month using AI tools, outpacing two years of fixes combined

Google announced that, thanks to its internal AI tools, it has fixed more security vulnerabilities in its Chrome browser over the past month than it did in the previous two years combined. On Thursday, the tech giant revealed it had addressed a staggering 1,072 security bugs across the last two Chrome versions, both released in June. This figure surpasses the total number of bugs patched in the 23 prior versions released over the preceding two years, which amounted to 1,036 fixes.
Since the emergence of large language models (LLMs), cybersecurity experts have warned that AI-powered systems would uncover an increasingly enormous number of bugs, forcing defenders to also leverage AI to stay ahead of malicious hackers. That prediction is now becoming reality, backed by real-world data. A chart published by Google, included in a white paper detailing the company's efforts to use AI for finding and patching flaws more quickly, illustrates this exponential rise. For context, Chrome 126 was released in June 2024, while the two most recent versions—Chrome 149 and 150—were launched last month. Google refers to each of these versions as a "milestone."
"By applying models like Gemini, we are preemptively fixing vulnerabilities, outpacing our adversaries and making Chrome safer with every update," said Turner.
Google is not alone in experiencing this trend. Earlier this month, Microsoft announced it had patched a record 570 security flaws across its product lines during its monthly scheduled updates, commonly known as "Patch Tuesday." Microsoft attributed this sudden spike in bug fixes to its own use of AI. Meanwhile, Apple does not appear to be seeing the same exponential increase. According to an independent tally of bugs fixed in its products, Apple has patched 482 bugs in 2026, which is roughly on track to match or exceed the number of fixes from last year, and also roughly equal to the number of bugs Apple patched in 2015.
