Google removes visible watermarks from AI-generated images, videos, and songs

Google announced on Friday that users can now remove the visible watermark from its AI-generated content, including images, videos, and songs. The company clarified that this change won't affect the invisible SynthID watermark or the metadata tied to C2PA standards. In a post on X, Josh Woodward, the company's VP for Gemini, explained that this toggle will be available for the Nano Banana, Omni, and Lyria models. He noted that the option to switch off the visible watermark will be accessible in Gemini and Google's video editor, Flow, with support for Search expected to arrive soon.

This shift reflects a changing approach to labeling AI-generated media. While visible watermarks can sometimes make content less practical for professional or creative projects, the need to identify AI-generated material remains important. "We're striking a balance here between creative control and safety: while the visible watermarks are now optional, invisible SynthID watermarks and C2PA metadata are still being used for transparency. So you can still use Gemini or Search to see if an image was AI-generated," Woodward wrote.

The feature will roll out over the coming days. Once available, users can navigate to Settings > Media Watermark to turn the visible mark on or off. Additionally, Google is open-sourcing a new library called Credentio, which allows developers to embed a local validation mechanism directly into their apps. This move follows Anthropic's controversial decision to add a watermark to text and files generated by Claude, a step taken to comply with EU regulations.
