Google's AI Search Now Tailors Responses Using Your Gmail and Photos

Google's AI Mode, its conversational Search tool for detailed inquiries, is becoming more tailored to individual users. On Thursday, the company revealed it is integrating "Personal Intelligence" into AI Mode, allowing the feature to access information from your Gmail and Google Photos to deliver more customized answers. This Personal Intelligence capability was initially introduced last week within the Gemini app, designed to help the AI assistant provide more relevant responses by connecting data across Google's ecosystem, beginning with Gmail, Photos, Search, and YouTube history.

This optional feature is now being made available to AI Mode for Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the United States, with support in English. By incorporating Personal Intelligence into both Gemini and AI Mode, Google is utilizing the extensive user data already present within its services. Since many people regularly use platforms like Gmail and Photos, Google can offer a level of personalization that competitors may find difficult to replicate. Users who prefer not to have AI analyze their emails and photos can easily enable or disable Personal Intelligence at any time.

"With Personal Intelligence, recommendations don’t just match your interests - they fit seamlessly into your life," explained Robby Stein, VP of Product for Google Search, in a blog post. "You don’t have to constantly explain your preferences or existing plans, it selects recommendations just for you, right from the start."

For instance, if you are organizing a family trip and searching for activities and dining options, AI Mode with Personal Intelligence can reference your hotel reservation from Gmail and past vacation photos from Google Photos to create a customized itinerary. You might receive a suggestion like a classic ice cream shop based on numerous ice cream-related photos in your library. Google emphasizes that AI Mode goes beyond generic lists, offering a personalized foundation for your planning.

"Personal Intelligence can also be particularly helpful for shopping, because AI Mode considers the types of items you buy and where you shop," Stein added. "If you need a new coat for your upcoming trip, AI Mode could automatically take into account the brands you prefer, as well as your flight confirmation in Gmail to identify the destination and timing (Chicago in March). You’ll get suggestions for windproof, versatile coats that fit the weather and your preferred look. It’s like a personal shopper who already knows your itinerary and the vibe you’re going for."

Other example queries include: "Make a scavenger hunt for [partner’s name] to celebrate our anniversary. For each location, include a hint about us," or "I’m decorating [child’s name]’s bedroom, give me ideas for a theme and suggestions for decor."

Google clarifies that AI Mode does not directly train on the contents of your Gmail inbox or Google Photos library. Instead, it learns from specific user prompts and the model's corresponding responses.
