Google launches Google Pics: New AI image creation and editing tool debuts in Workspace

Google is making its move into the creative design space with the launch of Google Pics, a new tool for generating and editing images. The product will be integrated into the Google Workspace suite, available to business clients as well as subscribers to Google’s premium AI tiers. According to the company, the tool—powered by its Nano Banana image generation model—will be rolled out over the next few weeks to the majority of Workspace users and those paying for Google AI Pro or Ultra.
Positioned as a competitor to popular platforms like Adobe Express and Canva, Google Pics is designed for everyday design tasks you might encounter at work, and occasionally in your personal projects. You could use it to whip up a poster, craft social media graphics, or produce other visual content and illustrations. However, there’s a key distinction from Canva, where artists and photographers can sell templates, graphics, and photos in a marketplace and earn royalties. Google Pics focuses on AI-driven creation, drawing on models trained on artists' work, rather than offering a platform for original, publishable art. Similarly, unlike Adobe Express—which creators often use to build designs from scratch—Google Pics is prompt-based: you type a request and the AI generates the result, rather than designing something new manually.
The app comes packed with additional editing features, such as tools for isolating and transforming objects, modifying or translating text within images, and more. It also supports collaborative editing and lets you generate multiple versions of a requested image, so you can choose the one that works best. Google Pics will be built directly into Google Workspace, debuting today in Docs and Slides, with plans to expand to Google Drive in the future.
