Google Launches Free AI Media Verification Tool to Detect AI-Generated Images, Videos, and Audio

Google has unveiled a new public website that allows anyone to check whether a piece of media—whether it's an image, video, or audio clip—was created using AI. Previously, this tool was only available to a limited group of journalists, media professionals, and researchers who tested it during Google I/O last year. Now, the company is making it accessible to the general public. The platform accepts a wide range of file formats: for images, it supports JPG, JPEG, PNG, BMP, WEBP, AVIF, HEIC, HEIF, TIFF, TIF, and GIF; for videos, MP4, MOV, and WEBM; and for audio, WAV, MP3, OGG, FLAC, AAC, and M4A.

To determine whether media is AI-generated, Google relies on SynthID, a technology it first introduced in 2023. Several of the company's models—including Nano Banana, Veo, and Lyria—along with generation-capable tools like Gemini, Flow, ProducerAI, and Vids, all embed SynthID watermarks into the media they produce. Beyond Google, OpenAI, NVIDIA, and Kakao have also adopted SynthID, with OpenAI running its own content verification site. Apple is reportedly planning to add support in the near future as well.

Google has integrated SynthID verification directly into the Gemini app and Google Chrome. According to the company, users currently submit 1 million requests daily to verify content. Meanwhile, Microsoft and Meta have developed their own standards for watermarking and verifying content. That said, these tools are not foolproof—they frequently fail to detect content generated by their own creators' models.
