Pocket FM Doubles Revenue to $500M as AI Powers 93% of Its Audio Content Catalog

Pocket FM, an Indian platform specializing in audio storytelling, has seen its annualized revenue run rate double to $500 million over the last year, driven in large part by its growing reliance on artificial intelligence for content creation. According to co-founder and CEO Rohan Nayak, AI is now behind 93% of the company's entire catalog and is responsible for producing 99% of all new content. This pivot reflects the broader trend of generative AI making significant inroads into content production. Even so, Pocket FM—which launched in 2018 as a home for serialized audio stories—continues to depend on human creators for generating ideas and crafting narratives, while leveraging AI to transform those concepts into finished content at scale. The company's current strategy centers on developing AI tools that support the creative process, rather than allowing AI to generate content entirely on its own.

Economics have been a major factor driving Pocket FM's embrace of AI. Nayak noted that the technology has reduced the cost of content production by roughly 80 times. He also pointed out that 100 hours of content, which once required about a year to produce, can now be completed in a single day. This shift has also led to a dramatic surge in output. Nayak said the platform's more than 550,000 creators are now generating approximately 2.5 million hours of AI-powered content each year. Just two years ago, the startup's entire catalog amounted to around 100,000 hours. Overall, Pocket FM has built a library exceeding 770,000 audio series. This flood of new content has helped the platform boost listener retention, with Nayak noting that the 12-month revenue retention rate has climbed to 76%, up from 44% two years ago. He attributed part of that improvement to having a wider variety of stories available to suit different listener tastes.

Pocket FM's annualized revenue run rate was approximately $250 million a year ago, then rose to $430 million in April and now stands at $500 million. (Nayak explained that the startup calculates this figure by multiplying monthly revenue by 12, rather than relying on contracted recurring revenue.)

This growth coincided with Pocket FM's increased use of AI in content production, its expansion into markets such as the U.K., Germany, and France, and the introduction of user-generated content in the U.S. The startup reported that 96 titles on its platform have each generated over $1 million in revenue, including 13 that have surpassed $10 million. Starting with India as its primary market, Pocket FM now boasts more than 250 million listeners across over 20 countries. The U.S. market, which grew about 70% over the past year, is its largest, accounting for roughly 70% of its annualized revenue run rate. Nayak said about $85 million of Pocket FM's annualized revenue comes from advertising, while the remaining approximately $415 million comes from users paying to unlock individual episodes.

**Moving beyond audio**

Pocket FM's parent company, Pocket Entertainment, is now aiming to extend its AI-driven content model beyond audio. The Pocket Saga app is currently available only in the U.S., and its content is entirely AI-produced—unlike Pocket FM, where humans remain involved in developing stories. The startup is also using successful Pocket FM audio stories to create AI-generated videos for Pocket Saga, with no traditional live-action production involved.

Pocket Entertainment plans to expand further beyond audio and microdramas, with intentions to enter at least two more entertainment formats over the next five years. The company also aims to turn successful stories from its platforms into books, television, and movies through licensing deals. Alongside this growth, Bengaluru- and Culver City, California-based Pocket Entertainment is in discussions with investors about raising fresh capital. A recent report indicated the startup was seeking $100 million to $120 million at a valuation of about $2 billion. Nayak did not deny the talks but said the startup was under no immediate pressure to raise capital. He declined to specify how much it could raise or at what valuation, but noted that a new round would primarily be used to invest further in AI and new entertainment formats. Meanwhile, Pocket Entertainment said it is profitable and generating positive cash flow on an adjusted basis, but declined to disclose its profit, cash flow, or margins. A public listing, however, remains some way off. It's keeping its options open for an eventual listing in either India or the U.S., though.
