According to the BCBSA's findings, there was "a sharp increase in patients being documented as having complex conditions," yet the organization contends there exists a "clear disconnect between [medical] coding and treatment," since there is "no evidence of corresponding change in care delivered."

The New York Times highlighted this analysis as merely the most recent indication that AI is fueling rising healthcare costs. Although conflicts between hospitals and insurers regarding treatments and payments are hardly unprecedented, the NYT noted that AI deployment on both sides appears to be exacerbating the situation. Dr. Shiv Rao, who founded the AI startup Abridge, conceded that AI usage might produce "a horrible dystopic future nobody wants to live in," characterized by "bots fighting bots, agents fighting agents." Nevertheless, Rao suggested it could also ease tensions and lower expenses. Meanwhile, the BCBSA's senior vice president Luke Chalker pushed back against framing the matter as a battle, asserting, "It's not a war. It's a completely one-sided blood bath," with insurers suffering the losses.
