Intel Announces New GPU Production to Rival Nvidia's Dominance

As Intel works to revitalize its business, the company’s CEO has pledged to begin manufacturing a new category of processor that has been widely popularized by competitor Nvidia. During the Cisco AI Summit on Tuesday, Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan revealed plans to start producing graphics processing units, or GPUs.

Unlike the central processing units that Intel has long been known for, GPUs are more specialized chips frequently used in gaming and in training artificial intelligence systems. The project will be led by Kevork Kechichian, executive vice president and general manager of Intel’s data center group. Kechichian joined Intel in September as part of a wave of engineering-focused hires.

Further supporting the effort, Intel brought on Eric Demmers in January. Demmers had spent over 13 years at Qualcomm, where he most recently held the position of senior vice president of engineering. The initiative appears to be in its formative phases, with Tan noting that the company intends to shape its strategy based on customer requirements.

Although Nvidia did not create the GPU, this type of chip has been central to its rise. Nvidia’s AI-focused GPUs are highly advanced and in strong demand, giving the company a dominant position in the market. Intel’s move into this space is notable, especially since Tan emphasized consolidation and a focus on core business areas when he became CEO last March. While GPUs remain semiconductors, this still marks a significant expansion for Intel.
