Atlassian Launches AI Agents in Jira to Boost Team Productivity and Manage Workflows

Atlassian, a major enterprise software company, has introduced a new approach for integrating human and AI collaboration, aiming to help teams achieve dramatically higher output without a corresponding increase in disorganization.
The company unveiled "agents in Jira" this Wednesday. This enhancement enables users of its Jira project management platform to assign and oversee work for digital AI agents directly from the same interface used for human team members. Enterprises can now delegate tasks and support tickets to these AI agents, mirroring the process for human assignments. The system monitors progress, sets deadlines, and tracks various other metrics. Additionally, teams can incorporate AI agents into projects that are already underway. This functionality is currently accessible as an open beta.
"Atlassian has spent decades developing collaboration software to help people accomplish work," said Yehoshua. "Now, with the introduction of agents, a significant portion of that work is being handled by AI. This makes coordinating between humans and agents essential."
However, Atlassian recognizes that simply providing more automation options does not automatically reduce workload, Yehoshua noted. She emphasized that the central innovation of this update is consolidating all management within a single dashboard. "There's a growing sentiment that these AI agents are actually creating more tasks and, in some respects, more confusion for people," Yehoshua explained. "Our strength lies in bringing order to that potential chaos."
As businesses continue to explore how to gain a return on investment from AI tools, this unified management perspective could be highly valuable. The capability to directly compare the performance of AI agents and humans on identical projects may help organizations identify the most effective initial deployments for automation and determine which responsibilities should stay under human direction.
Yehoshua indicated this announcement is merely the first step, as Atlassian plans to progressively incorporate more AI capabilities across its existing software suite. "The objective is to empower people to work more productively alongside AI, and I believe this is a significant move in that direction," she stated. "This is just the start of a long journey, but it's a crucial step in integrating AI into established workflows, which is a very exciting development."
