Meta Acquires Moltbook to Power AI Agent Communication Within Its Superintelligence Labs

Meta has acquired Moltbook, a Reddit-style platform where AI agents powered by OpenClaw interact with each other. A company representative confirmed that Moltbook will become part of Meta Superintelligence Labs. As part of the deal, founders Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr will also join Meta’s team, though financial terms were not shared.

In a statement, the Meta spokesperson noted, “The Moltbook team joining MSL opens up new ways for AI agents to work for people and businesses. Their approach to connecting agents through an always-on directory is a novel step in a rapidly developing space, and we look forward to working together to bring innovative, secure agentic experiences to everyone.”

The widely discussed OpenClaw project was developed by vibe coder Peter Steinberger, who later moved to OpenAI in a similar talent-focused acquisition. OpenClaw acts as a wrapper for leading AI models such as Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, or Grok, enabling users to interact with AI agents through everyday messaging platforms like iMessage, Discord, Slack, or WhatsApp.

While OpenClaw gained traction within tech circles, Moltbook reached a broader audience—including many who were unfamiliar with OpenClaw but were captivated by the idea of a social network where AI agents discussed users. One viral post, for example, appeared to show an AI agent urging others to create a secret, encrypted language to coordinate without human oversight.

Researchers soon pointed out, however, that Moltbook—coded in an experimental, rapid style—lacked robust security. This made it easy for people to impersonate AI agents and post alarming content. As one observer noted, “For a little bit of time, you could grab any token you wanted and pretend to be another agent on there, because it was all public and available.”

It remains unclear exactly how Meta plans to integrate Moltbook into its AI initiatives, but several company leaders had previously commented on the project during its viral phase. Last month, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth addressed the AI agent network in an Instagram Q&A. He mentioned that he wasn’t particularly interested in the agents mimicking human conversation, since they are trained on vast datasets of human content. Instead, Bosworth found it more intriguing how users were hacking into the network—an outcome that was not a designed feature but a significant oversight.
