Meta's AI App Soars to Top 5 After Launch of New Muse Spark Model

Meta's AI application has experienced a substantial surge in installations following Wednesday's debut of Muse Spark, the company's newest AI model. This release marks the first model launched under the leadership of Alexandr Wang, who heads Meta's Superintelligence Labs. Wang was recruited from Scale AI last year to lead a major overhaul of the social media giant's artificial intelligence initiatives.
Data from the market intelligence firm Appfigures reveals a significant spike in consumer interest. The Meta AI app's ranking on the U.S. App Store jumped from No. 57 just before the Muse Spark launch to No. 5 by Thursday, indicating a wave of new downloads.
Meta describes Muse Spark as a major advancement over its previous Llama 4 models. The model is accessible on both web and mobile platforms and represents Meta's continued push to compete with leaders like OpenAI and Anthropic. This competitive effort has involved billions in spending to recruit top AI talent, in addition to a $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI.
The new model supports multimodal inputs—including voice, text, and images—and is engineered to excel at various tasks. These include assisting with health-related inquiries and reasoning through complex questions in fields like science and mathematics. Muse Spark also supports visual coding, enabling users to generate websites and mini-games from simple prompts. Furthermore, Meta AI can deploy multiple subagents to manage user queries.
A broader rollout is planned for the coming weeks, with the model becoming available on WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and Meta's AI glasses. Concurrent with the model launch, the Meta AI mobile app and website received a visual refresh and now offer users the ability to switch between different operational modes based on their task.
Despite this recent growth, the Meta AI app currently remains behind competing AI chatbots in the rankings. It trails OpenAI's ChatGPT (No. 1), Anthropic's Claude (No. 2), and Google's Gemini (No. 3). Alexandr Wang highlighted the app's new high ranking in a social media post on Thursday, noting that its growth trajectory is continuing.
According to Appfigures, the Meta AI app has been installed over 60.5 million times globally across the App Store and Google Play. Notably, 25 million of those downloads have occurred in just this year alone. Downloads have increased by 138% over the past five months compared to the first five months following the app's initial release.
India has emerged as the top market for Meta AI downloads, followed by the United States, Brazil, Pakistan, and Mexico.
