Meta Acquires Humanoid Robotics Startup Assured Robot Intelligence to Boost AI and Human-Robot Interaction

Meta has announced the acquisition of Assured Robot Intelligence (ARI), a startup specializing in humanoid robotics, for an undisclosed amount. The social media giant confirmed that ARI's team, including its co-founders, will be integrated into its Superintelligence Labs research division, which operates under Meta's broader AI unit. Prior to the acquisition, ARI had secured an undisclosed seed round from Aix Ventures, an AI-focused seed fund. The startup was developing foundation models designed to enable humanoid robots to handle a wide range of physical tasks, including household chores.

Co-founder Xiaolong Wang previously worked as a researcher at Nvidia and served as an associate professor at UC San Diego, earning numerous prestigious awards for his work. Co-founder Lerrel Pinto, who taught at NYU and co-founded Fauna Robotics—a startup focused on kid-sized humanoid robots that Amazon acquired last month—also boasts an impressive list of accolades. According to Meta, "This team, led by Lerrel Pinto and Xiaolong Wang, will bring a deep expertise in how we can design our models and frontier capabilities for robot control and self-learning to whole-body humanoid control." ARI's contributions are expected to accelerate Meta's ambitions in the humanoid robotics space.

Meta researchers have been exploring humanoid robotics technology for several years. A leaked internal memo from a year ago outlined the company's aspirations to develop such robots, including both AI models and hardware, with a focus on consumer applications. Even if Meta never launches a consumer humanoid product, many AI experts now argue that achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI)—the theoretical milestone where AI matches or exceeds human intelligence across all domains—may require training AI models in the physical world. In this scenario, robots learn through direct interaction with their environment, rather than relying solely on data.

The acquisitions of ARI and Fauna Robotics reflect a broader industry push toward humanoid robotics, with wildly varying forecasts underscoring both the potential and the uncertainty surrounding this emerging technology. Goldman Sachs projects a market size of $38 billion by 2035, while Morgan Stanley estimates it could reach $5 trillion by 2050. This wide range highlights the enormous opportunities—and the significant unknowns—in a field that is still finding its footing.
