The device is expected to build on the technology developed by Limitless, an AI startup that Meta acquired in late 2025. Limitless had created a wearable pendant that could be clipped to clothing or worn as a necklace, allowing it to record conversations. At the time of the acquisition, Meta stated that the deal would help "accelerate our work to build AI-enabled wearables."

Previous attempts at AI wearables have struggled to gain traction with consumers. This may be due to privacy concerns, tone-deaf marketing, or simply a lack of practical usefulness. However, companies like OpenAI remain committed to the concept. The memo reportedly also outlines plans for Meta to expand its lineup of AI glasses and introduce a business subscription service called Wearables for Work. Through these upcoming devices, Meta appears to be aiming for a turnaround for its hardware-focused Reality Labs division, which lost $4 billion in the first quarter of this year.
