Meta has officially launched its latest AI image creation tool, Muse Image, developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs, the company’s specialized artificial intelligence division. Internally referred to by the codename Mango, this new feature is available at no cost through the Meta AI app, as well as within Instagram Stories and WhatsApp. So, what exactly can you accomplish with Muse? The capabilities appear quite similar to those of other AI image generators—users can produce plenty of whimsical and cartoon-style visuals. For those struggling with creativity and unable to devise original prompts, Meta notes that Muse includes “presets,” or pre-made image prompts, designed to “inspire ideas.”
A promotional video showcases additional potential applications. For instance, Muse can be used to craft custom advertisements—AI has increasingly infiltrated the advertising sector over the past year—or to experiment with interior design concepts. In the video, a user employs Muse to visualize how a used couch might appear in their garage. This particular function is intended to integrate with Facebook Marketplace, Meta’s popular platform for secondhand furniture and accessories, similar to Craigslist. The model also supports prompt-based image editing, enabling users to generate images for sharing across Meta’s suite of apps and platforms. “Ask it to mock up an image of you in front of a historical landmark, cleanly erase a photobomber from the background of a shot, or write a custom prompt to build a functional QR code,” the company suggests.
At the same time, Meta is introducing a range of new AI effects for Instagram Stories, all powered by Muse. These effects include various customizable filters that can alter existing photos. Meta states that using the new AI model is free for “everyday creation,” though beyond a certain usage threshold, users will need to subscribe to Meta’s paid plans. The company also revealed that Muse Video—presumably an AI video generator—is “already in development.” Over the past year, Meta has released numerous AI applications and services, including an assistant named Creator and Pocket, an app for vibe-coding video games. While the company has faced criticism for having a somewhat unclear AI strategy, it remains on track to invest heavily in AI infrastructure this year as it continues expanding its offerings.
