Meta has expanded its AI assistant Muse to Mac computers. The Mac version of Muse is capable of engaging with your files, messages, calendar, notes, and mail—all directly within their native applications. This launch comes on the heels of Muse's debut on mobile and web earlier this month, where it swiftly climbed to the top of the U.S. App Store rankings.

As with its other platform versions, you have control over what Muse can access on your Mac through an opt-in system. Furthermore, Meta states that the app will consistently request your permission before carrying out sensitive operations. The arrival of this desktop app coincides with escalating rivalry among consumer-oriented AI agents—a development many industry observers view as the future of computing. This shift is upending the app sector, software-as-a-service companies, and potentially even hardware like the iPhone down the line.

Beyond Muse, every major company now provides consumer-facing agentic AI. Meanwhile, other AI agents have gained momentum by enabling users to interact with them through text messages. Poke, one of the earliest breakthrough successes in this area, was acquired by Cognition in July. In the meantime, Instinct—the newest AI assistant often discussed in tech circles lately—is reportedly securing additional funding at a $10 billion valuation.

At present, the central question is who can seize the largest share of the consumer market in this space, and do so swiftly. This has prompted Muse and Instinct to release new features at a breakneck pace—both introduced voice calling this week, for example. As Mark Zuckerberg remarked on X while unveiling the Mac app, "The team is shipping fast."
