Microsoft Assures Customers: Anthropic Claude AI Models Remain Available Despite Government Feud

Microsoft has become the first major technology firm to guarantee continued access to Anthropic's AI models for its customers, despite an ongoing dispute between the AI startup and the Department of War, officially titled the Department of Defense. The conflict escalated when the Defense Department labeled Anthropic as a supply chain risk, a classification usually applied to foreign adversaries. This designation followed Anthropic's refusal to provide the Pentagon with unrestricted access to its technology for applications the company deemed unsafe, including mass surveillance systems and fully autonomous weaponry.

As a result of the designation, the Pentagon is barred from using Anthropic's products. Furthermore, any business or government agency collaborating with the Pentagon must verify that they do not utilize Anthropic's models. Anthropic has committed to legally challenging this designation in court.

Microsoft, which provides a wide range of services from Office software to cloud solutions for numerous federal agencies, including the Defense Department, has affirmed its stance through a spokesperson. The company stated it will keep offering Anthropic's models within its own products and to its customer base. "Our legal team has reviewed the designation and determined that Anthropic's products, such as Claude, can stay accessible to our customers—excluding the Department of War—via platforms like M365, GitHub, and Microsoft's AI Foundry. We can also maintain our partnership with Anthropic on projects unrelated to defense," the spokesperson explained in an email, a position initially covered by CNBC.

This assurance aligns with the statement from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who pledged to contest the designation. He clarified, "Regarding our customers, it clearly only affects the use of Claude as a direct component of contracts with the Department of War, not all usage by customers holding such contracts." Amodei added, "Even for Department of War contractors, the supply chain risk designation does not—and cannot—restrict uses of Claude or business dealings with Anthropic if those are separate from their specific Department of War contracts."

Meanwhile, Claude's consumer growth has maintained its upward trajectory after Anthropic stood firm against the department's demands.
