xAI Co-Founder Announces Departure Amidst Wave of Founding Team Exits

Late Monday evening, Yuhuai (Tony) Wu, a co-founder of xAI, revealed his departure from the company. In a post on X, he stated, “It’s time for my next chapter,” adding, “It is an era with full possibilities: a small team armed with AIs can move mountains and redefine what’s possible.”

While such announcements are common in the tech industry, this exit contributes to a concerning trend for the AI lab. Out of the original 12-person founding team, five members have now left, with four of those departures occurring within just the past year. Infrastructure lead Kyle Kosic moved to OpenAI in mid-2024, followed by Google veteran Christian Szegedy in February 2025. More recently, Igor Babushkin departed this past August to launch a venture firm, and former Microsoft employee Greg Yang cited health reasons when he left just last month.

All indications suggest these separations have been friendly, and there are understandable reasons why founders might move on after nearly three years. Elon Musk is widely known as a demanding leader, and with SpaceX’s acquisition of xAI finalized and an IPO anticipated in the coming months, those involved stand to gain significantly. Additionally, the current climate is highly favorable for raising funds for AI startups, making it natural for top researchers to pursue their own ventures.

However, less harmonious factors could also be influencing these decisions. The company’s flagship Grok chatbot has faced issues with erratic behavior and suspected internal interference, which can easily create tension within technical teams. Furthermore, recent adjustments to xAI’s image-generation tools led to a surge of deepfake pornography on the platform, resulting in gradual but serious legal repercussions.

Regardless of the specific causes, the overall effect is worrisome. Significant challenges remain for xAI, and the upcoming IPO will subject the lab to unprecedented scrutiny. With Musk already advancing plans for orbital data centers, the pressure to deliver on these ambitious projects will be immense. The rapid evolution of AI models continues unabated, and if Grok fails to compete with the latest offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic, the public offering could face difficulties.

Ultimately, the situation carries considerable risk, and retaining its top AI talent is more critical than ever for xAI.
