Netflix Acquires AI Video Editing Startup InterPositive in Potential $600 Million Deal

Last week, Netflix revealed its purchase of InterPositive, an AI firm established by Ben Affleck that assists filmmakers in editing footage during post-production. Reports from Bloomberg suggest this transaction could reach a value of up to $600 million, placing it among the streaming service's most significant acquisitions to date. The record amount Netflix has previously paid for an acquisition stands at roughly $700 million for the Roald Dahl Story Company.

Although Netflix has not officially verified the specifics, sources indicate to Bloomberg that the initial cash payment might be less, with InterPositive's owners qualifying for further payments based on achieving certain performance goals. InterPositive develops tools designed to increase efficiency in post-production workflows—such as resolving continuity problems or improving scenes—but it does not produce new content or utilize footage without authorization.

This purchase aligns with Netflix's wider initiative to incorporate AI into content creation. The company has already employed generative AI in its original programming, like crafting a building-collapse sequence for the Argentine series "The Eternaut."

Competitors are pursuing similar strategies. Amazon is developing internal AI teams for film and television projects, and Disney has entered into an agreement with OpenAI. However, not all parties support this trend. Industry workers have expressed worries about possible job displacement and whether AI companies are providing fair compensation to creators for the training data used.
