Apple Reportedly Developing AI Pin Wearable with Cameras and Microphones

A report published on Wednesday suggests Apple could be working on its own AI wearable device. The rumored product is described as a pin designed to be worn on clothing, featuring two cameras and three microphones.

If this device reaches the market, it would signal growing momentum in the AI hardware sector. This development follows remarks made on Monday by OpenAI’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, Chris Lehane, who indicated at a Davos event that his company is likely to unveil its first highly anticipated AI hardware device in the second half of this year. Additional reporting hints that OpenAI’s device might take the form of earbuds.

According to the report, Apple’s pin is envisioned as a “thin, flat, circular disc with an aluminum-and-glass shell.” Engineers aim to make it roughly the size of an AirTag, though “only slightly thicker.” The device is said to include two cameras—one with a standard lens and another with a wide-angle lens—for capturing photos and video, along with a physical button, a speaker, and a charging strip on the back similar to those used by FitBit.

Apple may be attempting to speed up development of this product to compete with OpenAI’s upcoming offering. The report notes that the pin could potentially launch in 2027, with an initial production run of 20 million units.

However, it remains uncertain whether consumers will embrace this type of AI wearable. Two former Apple employees previously founded Humane AI, a startup that also marketed an AI pin. Humane’s device similarly incorporated built-in microphones and a camera, but it struggled after release. The company ultimately ceased operations and sold its assets to HP within two years of launching its product.
