Nvidia Invests $1.5 Billion in SB Energy to Power OpenAI Data Center, Secures Sole Compute Supplier Role

Nvidia has announced a $1.5 billion investment in SB Energy, a data center venture tied to SoftBank and OpenAI. This move guarantees Nvidia will serve as the exclusive provider of compute infrastructure at OpenAI’s Ports-Pike facility near Cincinnati, Ohio. Additionally, Nvidia is extending up to $105 billion in credit to support construction of the site, which is expected to grow from an initial 4.25 gigawatts to as much as 8 gigawatts, according to a filing with the SEC.

SB Energy’s current backers include SoftBank and OpenAI. SoftBank previously held $5.8 billion in Nvidia stock but sold those shares in November to free up capital for other AI-focused investments.

The data center and power developer plans to build a 9.2 gigawatt natural gas power plant on the property, which sits on land owned by the U.S. Department of Energy. That site once enriched uranium for the nation’s nuclear arsenal and for U.S. Navy submarines. The power plant carries an estimated price tag of $33 billion—a figure that underscores the sharp rise in natural gas facility construction costs, which have climbed 66% over the past two years, per BloombergNEF.

Once SB Energy’s plant and similar projects come online, they will be competing for natural gas alongside export markets. That convergence could drive natural gas prices up threefold in certain regions of the country.
