OpenAI Halts Controversial "Adult Mode" for ChatGPT Indefinitely

OpenAI has halted another initiative, at least temporarily. On Thursday, the Financial Times revealed that the AI firm is "indefinitely" suspending plans to create an "erotic" mode for ChatGPT. This proposed "adult mode," initially suggested by CEO Sam Altman in October, drew significant criticism from technology watchdog organizations and even from OpenAI's own employees. In January, a meeting between company leaders and its advisory council became tense, with one advisor warning that OpenAI might be creating a "sexy suicide coach," as previously reported by The Wall Street Journal. Faced with ongoing backlash, the feature's launch was postponed several times. According to the FT, there is now no scheduled release date for the erotic functionality.

The adult mode is just the latest project OpenAI has set aside in recent days as the AI leader sharpens its strategic focus. On Tuesday, the company discreetly stated it would deprioritize Instant Checkout, a ChatGPT feature designed to transform the chatbot into a shopping platform for e-commerce purchases. Then, on Wednesday, OpenAI unexpectedly announced the shutdown of Sora, its AI video generator. Sora had faced criticism for contributing to the wave of AI-generated low-quality content, often called "slop," that has spread across the internet since its 2024 debut. These adjustments follow a report by The Wall Street Journal about a week earlier, which indicated OpenAI would undergo a "major strategy shift" to eliminate distractions and concentrate on its core priorities: business clients and developers.

Why is OpenAI choosing now to eliminate these diversions and double down on its main goals? It may be responding to competitive pressure from Anthropic, which has been aggressively launching a suite of coding and business tools in recent months—achieving notable success in attracting customers as a result. The two companies have also been publicly competing for Pentagon contracts, a contest OpenAI seems to have won. Three weeks ago, OpenAI announced a $200 million deal with the Department of Defense, while Anthropic is currently entangled in a legal dispute with the agency. In essence, if recent trends are any indication, the future of AI likely leans less toward adult content and memes, and more toward enterprise applications and defense technology.
