OpenAI Delays "Adult Mode" Launch for Verified Users, Pushing Back Erotica Access

OpenAI has postponed the introduction of "adult mode," a planned ChatGPT functionality that would enable verified adult users to access erotic material and other adult-oriented content. The feature was initially unveiled by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in October, when he stated, "In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our 'treat adult users like adults' principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults."

This launch had already been rescheduled once. Originally slated for December—a period during which Altman reportedly issued an internal "code red" memo urging teams to concentrate on enhancing the core ChatGPT experience—it was moved to the first quarter of this year. Now, an OpenAI representative has informed Axios that the company is "pushing out the launch of adult mode" to prioritize work that addresses more immediate user needs. This includes advancing the chatbot's intelligence, refining its personality, and making it "more proactive."

"We still believe in the principle of treating adults like adults, but getting the experience right will take more time," the spokesperson explained. The duration of this latest delay remains unspecified. The information was initially reported by Sources.
