OpenAI Sunsets Atlas Browser, Shifts AI Browsing Features to ChatGPT Desktop and Chrome Extension

OpenAI is winding down Atlas, the AI-powered browser it launched in October with ChatGPT integrated at its core. However, the company isn't abandoning the concept of using artificial intelligence to enhance web browsing. Instead, it's taking the agentic browsing features tested in Atlas and spreading them across ChatGPT's desktop application and a new Google Chrome extension.

The decision to shutter Atlas follows a directive from OpenAI's CEO of applications, Fidji Simo, who told the team several months ago to reduce "side quests." This same strategy led to the shutdown of the AI video generation tool Sora. Over the past year, the AI industry has been locked in a battle to challenge Chrome's dominance as the primary online destination. Competitors like Perplexity launched Comet, The Browser Company introduced Dia, and both Google and Microsoft have added new AI-powered features to Chrome and Edge, respectively.

After months of experimentation, OpenAI seems to have concluded that a browser is more of a feature than a final destination. As a result, it's integrating Atlas's browser-like agent capabilities into the environments where users already spend their time, starting with Chrome. OpenAI is launching a ChatGPT extension for Chrome that can access the context of whatever webpage you're viewing. This allows users to ask questions about pages, summarize content, or initiate longer tasks directly from the browser, positioning it as a direct rival to Google's Gemini Side Panel.

OpenAI is also upgrading its ChatGPT desktop app with a more robust browser. This new feature lets users browse websites, log into accounts, download files, and interact with web pages without leaving ChatGPT. Additionally, a separate cloud browser running on OpenAI's servers provides a remote environment where the app's agents can complete tasks on behalf of users. Together, these updates transform ChatGPT into a continuous workspace that seamlessly spans Chrome, the desktop app, and an AI agent.
