OpenAI Plans Revamped ChatGPT 'Super App' with Coding Tools and AI Agents to Compete with Anthropic

OpenAI is preparing to launch an updated version of ChatGPT within the next few weeks—one that aims to function as a "super app" featuring coding tools and AI agents, as reported by the Financial Times. The company's objective is reportedly to strengthen its competitive position against Anthropic, especially among business clients, while also moving closer to profitability ahead of a potential IPO. This strategy involves transforming ChatGPT into a gateway that guides free users toward paid products, such as the coding tool Codex. In fact, the FT quotes a senior OpenAI employee as stating, "Chat is dead."

Thibault Sottiaux, who leads OpenAI's core product and platform, explained that the company is developing a product "where you have your own personal agent that is capable of helping you … across everything in your life, be it personally or at work."

If this concept sounds familiar, it's because reports about OpenAI's super app ambitions have been circulating since last year. In March, The Wall Street Journal noted that these plans represent a major strategic shift for the company, following the launch of various standalone products in 2025. OpenAI executives now say they are abandoning "side quests" like the video generator Sora.
