OpenAI Nears $100 Billion Funding Round at Record $850 Billion Valuation

OpenAI is reportedly close to finalizing a funding round that would raise over $100 billion, potentially valuing the company above $850 billion. This significant investment arrives as the creator of ChatGPT continues to operate at a financial loss while progressing toward profitability.
In a move to generate more revenue, OpenAI has begun experimenting with advertisements for users of its free ChatGPT service. This strategy carries a notable risk, as it could either boost income or drive users away from the platform. Investors, however, appear confident, as the current valuation represents an increase of roughly $20 billion from initial expectations of around $830 billion. According to reports, the company's pre-money valuation will hold steady at $730 billion.
The initial portions of this substantial funding are said to be coming from prominent technology investors. These include Amazon, which is reportedly in discussions to contribute up to $50 billion; SoftBank, preparing an investment of approximately $30 billion; Nvidia, close to finalizing a $20 billion commitment; and Microsoft. Venture capital firms and sovereign wealth funds are anticipated to participate in later stages, which may push the total amount raised even higher.
