OpenAI Secures $10 Billion AI Chip Deal with Cerebras for Unprecedented Compute Power

On Wednesday, OpenAI revealed a multi-year partnership with AI chip specialist Cerebras. Cerebras stated it will begin supplying 750 megawatts of computing capacity to the AI leader this year, with deliveries extending through 2028. The financial scale of the agreement was also reported.
Both organizations emphasized that the core objective is to accelerate output speeds for OpenAI’s user base. In a published statement, OpenAI indicated these new systems will hasten responses that currently involve longer processing times. Andrew Feldman, co-founder and CEO of Cerebras, drew a parallel, stating that just as “broadband transformed the internet, real-time inference will transform AI.”
While Cerebras has operated for more than ten years, its prominence has grown substantially since the 2022 debut of ChatGPT and the subsequent surge in AI development. The company asserts that its systems, which utilize its own AI-optimized chips, outperform GPU-based alternatives like those from Nvidia.
Cerebras initiated plans for an initial public offering in 2024 but has postponed it several times since. During this period, the firm has consistently secured significant funding. Reports from Tuesday indicated the company is negotiating to raise an additional $1 billion at a valuation of $22 billion.
It is also notable that OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, is already an investor in Cerebras, and OpenAI previously evaluated acquiring the company. Sachin Katti of OpenAI commented, “OpenAI’s compute strategy is to build a resilient portfolio that matches the right systems to the right workloads.” He added, “Cerebras adds a dedicated low-latency inference solution to our platform. That means faster responses, more natural interactions, and a stronger foundation to scale real-time AI to many more people.”
